Report: Brighton and Crystal Palace battle it out for free agent Danny Simpson

Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace are rivals on the pitch. But now the pair will compete with each other off the pitch as they attempt to sign free agent Danny Simpson, .

Simpson is a free agent after leaving Leicester City at the end of last season. He trained with Celtic in the summer but is hoping to sign for a Premier League club. Currently, these two sides want him.

Crystal Palace are desperate to bolster their right-back department. Aaron Wan-Bissaka left in the summer to join Manchester United, leaving a gaping hole at right-back.

Joel Ward has been filling in at right-back but Roy Hodgson is targeting Simpson to add competition in this position. The 32-year-old is vastly experienced, racking up over 200 Premier League appearances throughout his career and picking up a title winners’ medal while with Leicester.

Brighton could also make a move for Simpson. Bruno Saltor retired last season so Graham Potter could bring in an extra face. Simpson fits the bill, especially given his top-flight nous.

TBR’s view

Crystal Palace should have used some of the Wan-Bissaka money to sort out their right-back position. Simpson would be a reasonable signing on a free transfer but he is not going to be the Eagles’ saviour.

After a poor start to the season, many are already tipping Crystal Palace for a relegation battle. Simpson and Ward are both adequate back-up full-backs but they needed someone with more quality to start.
