A handful of Premier League clubs, including Everton, have shown an interest in signing Smalling this summer. But Roma are unlikely to sell 31-year-old and Brands is yet to submit an official offer.

Smalling is thought to be open to a move to Goodison Park. But may be denied the chance on the back of missing across all competitions through injury last season. It meant he only played 21 times and started just 16 games.

The defender also only featured four times between February and the end of the Serie A campaign. Depriving Fonseca of a player he lauded, having claimed in April via Roma’s : “The team is a lot more secure with Chris.”
