Report: Borussia Dortmund set to beat Tottenham in race to sign Emre Can

that Borussia Dortmund are set to complete the signing of Juventus midfielder Emre Can before Friday’s deadline, despite Tottenham Hotspur making an offer to land the ex-Liverpool star.

Can, 26, was linked with a move to the Premier League and indeed back to his home country after managing just two Serie A starts this season. The likes of Miralem Pjanic, Aaron Ramsey, Blaise Matuidi and Adrien Rabiot have kept him out.

The former Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen man is now believed to have chosen to add a third German club to his CV rather than return to England – where he clocked up an impressive 167 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.

Can is valued at £30million this month and although Tottenham have made an offer, Can has chosen Dortmund. He will not be involved in Juventus’ squad to take on Torino on Tuesday night.

TBR’s view – A blow for Tottenham?

Certainly. Spurs need a holding midfielder that is able to sit in front of the back four and act as a combative shield to stop opposition midfielders from enjoying the freedom of the final third – a key problem in Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

Harry Winks is more of a ball-player, Eric Dier has struggled, Moussa Sissoko is injured and Victor Wanyama continues to be linked with the exit door. Can would have been ideal, at a decent price of £30million – so yes, it is a major blow.
