Report: Blackburn ‘closing in’ on loan signing of Leeds midfielder, Whites hoping for repeat of Harvey Elliott

Lancashire Live claim that Blackburn are ‘closing in’ on the loan signing of Ian Poveda from Leeds United. The pocket-sized winger was a regular from the bench in the Premier League last season. But he is struggling for game time this term, and Blackburn are set to get Poveda from Leeds on loan.

Poveda, 21, clocked up 14 Premier League outings for Leeds last season – but all of them came from the bench. The England Under-20 star, who joined Leeds in January 2020 from Manchester City, has played just 20 times for the Whites in total. Helder Costa remains at Elland Road.

If Jack Harrison or Raphinha are unavailable, Costs is preferred to Poveda. He needs game time and the report claims Blackburn are ‘closing in’. Barry Douglas spent 2020-21 on loan at Ewood Park. Leeds are happy to send him to Blackburn, after Harvey Elliott sparkled while on loan from Liverpool.

Poveda to Blackburn: Leaving Leeds on loan suits all parties

It is a move that could benefit all. Blackburn, firstly, need a winger and Poveda is just that. Tony Mowbray’s men need to replace Elliott who was excellent for the Championship side last term – having a hand in 18 goals in 42 games. Poveda will do well to match Elliott’s form.

But Blackburn are hopeful he can. For the winger himself, he will get plenty of crucial game time and for Leeds – they could find that Poveda returns a much-improved player. It is a brilliant move for all three parties. It comes after he could go on loan.
