Report: Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo emerges as potential option for Tottenham

that Benfica left-back Alex Grimaldo has emerged as a potential option for Tottenham Hotspur and Jose Mourinho this summer, as Spurs look to strengthen their options on the left side of the defence.

Grimaldo, 24, has been in excellent form for Benfica once again this season – clocking up 39 appearances in all competitions and even having a hand in nine goals, scoring once and laying on eight assists.

In his 156 appearances for Benfica, Grimaldo has become somewhat of an assist machine – laying on 30, at a ratio of almost one every five matches. He is considered one of the best left-sided defenders yet to move to a big European league.

Spurs are likely to be after a new left-back, with Danny Rose on loan at Newcastle and expected to leave in the summer. Jan Vertonghen’s contract is due to expire, and Ryan Sessegnon is naturally a left winger.

TBR’s view – Grimaldo would be a stunning signing for Tottenham

that former Barcelona defender Grimaldo has a release clause in his contract believed to be worth a whopping £55million – which would be a pricey addition if Spurs are forced to pay such a fee.

However, landing Grimaldo would solve Tottenham’s left-back area for years to come. Far above the standard of Davies or Tottenham’s other options, Grimaldo is still only 24. For at least the next five seasons, Grimaldo would solve Spurs’ issues.
