Liverpool transfer: Bundesliga club reportedly want ‘insane’ Reds ace
Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen have emerged as candidates to sign Liverpool defender Nat Phillips. the German outfit are keen to bolster their defensive ranks this summer.
Phillips enjoyed a circumstantial breakthrough campaign during 2020/21. Injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip meant he had to step up.
He didn’t disappoint either. The Bolton-born centre-back featured 20 times for Liverpool and caught the eye with a string of solid displays.
Now, Jurgen Klopp could be ready to sell him. With his primary central defenders now fit, and new signing Ibrahima Konate in place, first-team opportunities will be restricted.
At 24, Phillips will want to play. He got a taste for regular action at Anfield last season and that will be his immediate goal.
It is claimed that the defender will be available for just this summer. Brighton, Burnley and Newcastle have all been linked with a move for the Liverpool player.
Leverkusen would certainly be an attractive option though. The club will be in the Europa League next season and Phillips got a taste of European action during 2020/21.
It would also allow him the chance to head to a country he is familiar with. He played 22 times for VfB Stuttgart during 2019/20, helping them to promotion back to the Bundesliga.
Klopp called Phillips following a 4-2 win over Manchester United in May and the boss has been impressed with the enforcer.
Offloading Phillips makes sense for Liverpool
It could be a bit of a sickener for the youngster, but he shouldn’t take Liverpool’s decision to sell him personally.
With the likes of Van Dijk and Gomez now available and Konate in place, his chances will be limited.
What his performances last season will allow him to do, however, is get himself hooked up with a decent club that will play him regularly.
Phillips proved himself as a decent centre-back and given his age, he should still improve in the coming years.
Leverkusen looks like an attractive option and their interest could seriously tempt him to leave England.
