Report: Barcelona, Real Madrid and Simeone join Liverpool in chase for defender

that Jurgen Klopp is desperate to bring Sevilla defender Diego Carlos to Anfield this summer, but face enormous competition from some of Europe’s biggest sides.

Carlos, 27, is an uncapped Brazilian defender that only joined Sevilla last summer – and has played just 31 matches for the La Liga outfit. He has a contract at until 2024, he has a release clause worth £65million.

Liverpool do have options at centre-back, including the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. Joel Matip has spent time on the sidelines through injury, while Dejan Lovren is expected to leave this summer – with the Croat’s contract ending in 2021.

Liverpool, then, want to sign Carlos to replace Lovren and rival both Matip and Gomez to be van Dijk’s partner. However, they now face enormous competition from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Champions League rivals, Atletico Madrid.

TBR’s view – Can Liverpool win race for Carlos?

Carlos has finally found his best form in Spain, having previously played for French side Nantes and Porto’s reserve side. So the chances of Carlos wanting to risk his stunning form with a move to a new country may be something he wants to avoid.

Indeed, the chance to join the glamour of Barcelona or Real Madrid is enormous. Atletico and Diego Simeone also made their case this season with a Champions League triumph over Liverpool – with Atleti renowned for their focus on defence.

Carlos would be a top signing for Liverpool, but a move to Anfield needs work.
