Report: Aston Villa told to pay £40m for Norwich midfielder Todd Cantwell

Aston Villa reportedly want to sign Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell, but will need to find £40m if the Canaries are to agree to sell.

Cantwell is a key midfielder for Daniel Farke’s side but Norwich are open to selling any player, as long as the price is right. Indeed, they cashed in on Emi Buendia this summer, with Villa paying over £30m for him.

But with Jack Grealish seemingly edging closer to a move to Manchester City, Dean Smith is now eyeing up more players. that Cantwell is one of those players, although Norwich want £40m for their man.

Cantwell excelled for Norwich the last time they were in the Premier League. He then helped them to promotion last season, scoring six and laying on the same amount for his teammates.

As well as adding Buendia, Villa are also said to be close to signing Leon Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen.

Grealish, meanwhile, is close to a £100m move to Manchester City. Villa are expected to meet with their star man this week to discuss that potential switch.

Cantwell has quality but Villa already well stocked

Had Villa not already got Buendia in and signed Bailey, then the case for going for Cantwell could be argued more. But even with Grealish going, spending £40m on the Norwich man seems excessive.

Smith needs to be careful that he doesn’t just buy quantity to try and cover for the loss of Grealish. These players will want to play, and the club are well stocked in attacking midfield areas too.

So, while Cantwell is a serious talent – his former manager at Fortuna Sittard as Gini Wijnaldum – Villa might be better looking elsewhere here.
