Report: Aston Villa to rival Sheffield United for Aaron Ramsdale

understands that Aston Villa are making a late push to sign Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Sheffield United are still thought to be in pole position, however, after an £18.5 million bid was accepted last week by the Cherries.

The man with seven caps for the England under-21 outfit is expected to make his way back to Bramall Lane, having started his career in the youth ranks.

Last season the 6ft 3in custodian made 37 Premier League appearances for Bournemouth but relegation from the top-flight has left them needing to cash in on some of their top stars.

Villa are now thought to be in the race late in the day with Dean Smith keen to bolster his own goalkeeping ranks ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Tom Heaton missed a large chunk of last season through injury, with Pepe Reina arriving on loan for the second half of the campaign.

The AC Milan stopper has now returned to the San Siro following the expiration of his loan and Villa are perhaps in need of another stopper.

Orjan Nyland was another goalkeeper in the Villa squad last season but it’s fair to say he hasn’t been overly convincing.

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Villa will want to ensure a much smoother ride next time around.

Their transfer policy last season was somewhat scattergun and supporters will hope that changes this summer.

Targeting young, hungry British talent can only bode well and Ramsdale looks set for a bright future.

The 22-year-old might feel he has a point to prove at Bramall Lane following his earlier stint at the club, but it looks as though Villa are finally fishing in the right lake when it comes to transfers.
