Report: Aston Villa rivalling Norwich City for African goalkeeper

that newly-promoted Premier League duo Aston Villa and Norwich City have joined the race for African goalkeeper Edouard Mendy this summer.

Mendy, 27, is contemplating leaving Stade Reims after three years with the top-tier French side. He has some decent stats, conceding just 86 goals and keeping more than one clean sheet every three games – 36 times.

The two-time Senegal international is looking for a new challenge and it is believed that French trio Marseille, Rennes and Montpellier are all interested in landing Mendy this summer.

But Mendy’s head may have turned, after Aston Villa and Norwich became embroiled in a race for his signature earlier this week. It is believed both clubs made enquiries on the phone this week, for the 6ft 6in stopper.

TBR’s view

Aston Villa are said to be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, despite boasting three first-team stoppers. Jed Steer is a hero in many fans’ eyes, and he has just signed a new deal.

Despite his heroics, many do not see him as the long-term number one. But Lovre Kalinic is set to leave after a dismal six months with the Midlands, while Orjan Nyland remains on the recovery trail after a long-term knee injury.

Mendy is an excellent goalkeeper, and has a bit of everything. Shot stopping, claiming crosses and set=pieces due to his height. He could be an excellent signing for Villa this summer.
