Report: Aston Villa interested in January loan move for Danny Drinkwater
Aston Villa are reportedly interested in a move for midfielder Danny Drinkwater.
The 29-year-old Chelsea star is currently out on loan at Burnley, but is due to return to Stamford Bridge at the start of January.
, Burnley are unlikely to take up their option to extend the central midfielder’s loan at Turf Moor.
It is understood that Villa manager Dean Smith considers Drinkwater to be a decent option to help cover for their injured maestro John McGinn.
The report explains that Villa assistant boss John Terry could play a key role in trying to negotiate a deal, as he has a close friendship with current Chelsea manager Frank Lampard from their playing careers together.
Drinkwater was once a key part of a Leicester team that survived a relegation scrap in the Premier League and went on to win a top-flight title, but he’s gone off the boil in recent years.
He’s played just two first-team games for Burnley since joining them in the summer and it would be a big ask for him to walk into the Villa team in January and make an immediate impact.
TBR’s View:
Drinkwater certainly has the kind of attributes that Villa need for a relegation scrap, as they sit 18th in the Premier League table as it stands and are in poor form.
But the central midfielder surely isn’t up to speed and Smith’s side can do better in trying to find someone to fill McGinn’s void.
Drinkwater could be worth a gamble if they can pull off a loan deal to bring him in from Chelsea and would be great if he can rediscover form, but he’s definitely not someone to put a lot of trust in.
