Report: Aston Villa hold talks with free agent with 61 international caps

that Aston Villa have held preliminary talks over a move for veteran defender Gary Cahill, after the powerful centre-back was released by Chelsea at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old managed just eight appearances in all competitions under Maurizio Sarri and could now make a sensational return to newly-promoted Villa – 11 years after leaving the club to join Bolton in 2008.

Cahill came through the Villa academy and played 31 times for the club’s senior side, before moving to Bolton and then onto Chelsea. With the Blues, he clocked up 290 appearances, winning two Premier League titles.

Also a Champions League winner with Chelsea, Cahill is now on the lookout for a new club after being released by the Blues and Villa are said to have held early talks. Cahill was earning £100,000 a week.

TBR’s view – Villa need Cahill, but only if he lowers his wages

Villa have completed the signing of Tyrone Mings for an astronomical £26.5million, as well as bringing in Kortney Hause from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a permanent basis.

They join James Chester, but another centre-back is required and one with experience is needed. Chester is 30, but Mings is 26 and lacking in much top-flight experience, as is 23-year-old Hause.

Adding Cahill will not only dramatically improve Villa on the pitch, with the 61-time England international and Mings likely to be first choice, but he will improve those around him off of it.
