Report: Aston Villa battling Liverpool for Premier League goalkeeper
that Aston Villa are battling Liverpool for Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer, with the newly-promoted side desperately looking to sign a new stopper.
Villa have released Mark Bunn this summer, while Croatia international Lovre Kalinic looks set to leave the club just six months after joining. French side Nantes are interested in Kalinic, as per French outlet .
Jed Steer has signed a new contract but it seems as though Villa want another goalkeeper, even with Norway international Orjan Nyland waiting in the wings. They have been strongly linked with two goalkeepers of late.
Stade Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has been linked with Villa, while Jack Butland’s name continues to crop on the Midlands club’s shortlist. Now, England international McCarthy is said to be a target.

With Southampton near the bottom of the table last season, McCarthy conceded a rather large 44 goals in 25 league games – keeping just four clean sheets. But he made save after save for Southampton, and impressed.
Liverpool are also said to be keen in order to replace Simon Mignolet who could leave Anfield this summer.
TBR’s view – McCarthy would be an excellent signing for Villa
McCarthy is a top goalkeeper, renowned for his shot-stopping and at 29 years of age, he is in the peak of his career. Now with 66 Premier League appearances under his belt he has already shown that he is a proven top-flight performer.
He would be an excellent signing for Villa this summer. Steer is a good goalkeeper but he lacks the calibre of McCarthy. Nyland has been a bombscare since joining the club under Steve Bruce.
It remains to be seen how much the Saints goalkeeper would cost, but there is no doubt that he would be a good addition and a big step towards Premier League safety.
