Report: Aston Villa and Sheffield United make enquiries to sign Spain-based striker

that both Aston Villa and Sheffield United have made enquiries to sign Mallorca striker Ante Budimir after a stunning 2019-20 campaign in Spain’s top tier.

Budimir, 29, even earned a call-up to Croatia’s side last season after netting 13 goals in 35 La Liga appearances. Despite that solid form, which included a brace against Barcelona in December 2019, Budimir could not prevent Mallorca from being relegated.

Now, the report claims both Villa and Sheffield United have made enquiries to land the striker. It is believed Mallorca rate Budimir at a fee in the region of £13.5million, a figure which has seen Villarreal opt against splashing out.

The ball is certainly in Mallorca’s court, though, with three years left to run on Budimir’s contract. He has also played in Italy for Crotone and Sampdoria, while managing just one goal in 20 appearances for German club FC St. Pauli.

TBR’s view – Budimir is good, but is he Premier League quality?

Yes, Budimir scored goals for Mallorca in La Liga last season and you have got to be a proper striker to net twice in one match against Barcelona. But has he shown enough throughout his career to suggest he is Premier League quality?

Probably not. If Villa or the Blades can reduce his asking price to a seven-figure fee, then he might be worth taking a risk on. But the chances are that Budimir would struggle to adapt to the Premier League and at 29, both sides should use him as a last resort.
