Report: Arteta and Edu both agree that two senior Arsenal stars are no longer good enough

According to a report from , Arsenal feel that Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang aren’t up to the task to help them finish in the top four this season.

The Gunners claimed fourth spot last month after a few fantastic results. However, a winless January has pushed them down to sixth at the moment, and although they have games in hand to recover, it will not be easy.

The game against Burnley highlighted Arsenal’s immediate need for a striker. Lacazette linked play up really well, but he isn’t consistently doing what is expected of a number nine – score goals. His good pal Aubameyang’s career at the Emirates looks like it’s finished after his disciplinary breach.

As a result, Arsenal are desperate to bring in a new striker before the window shuts.

Arsenal feel Aubameyang and Lacazette will not fire them into the top four

Arsenal’s pursuit of a new striker has been well documented since the start of the month. Dusan Vlahovic is the number one target, while Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have also been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium.

The reason why the Gunners are so desperate for a new number nine this month, according to the report, is because they do not believe that Aubameyang and Lacazette are ‘up to the task’ to get them the fourth spot in the Premier League table.

That is why Lacazette hasn’t been offered a new deal and Arteta has no plans to reintegrate Aubameyang into his squad. Edu is working really hard to fulfil his manager’s wishes of signing a new striker, but it is proving to be difficult.

TBR View:

Lacazette and Aubameyang were both world-class strikers at one point, but their combined numbers since the start of last season haven’t really been great.

The two French-speaking strikers have scored 30 times in the league in about 18 months. That’s not enough for a side to break into the top four, especially when the contribution from their midfield isn’t as high as some of the other clubs in the league.

Arsenal are right to look for a new striker and the ones linked – Vlahovic, Isak and Calvert-Lewin – are all excellent options. However, none of them will be cheap and it will be interesting to see if Stan Kroenke is prepared to open his cheque book, just like he did last summer.
