, Patino is set to train regularly with the first-team next season, and he will play more often for the under-23s.

The report adds that Per Mertesacker believes that he could eventually become a first-team regular. He is also in line for a new contract in October.

Arsenal teenager could have done with Arteta’s men making Europe this coming season as new contract looms

It is fantastic news to see Patino edging closer to a first-team bow, and there may well be opportunities for the teenager to make his debut.

But the plans for him make it all the more frustrating the Gunners will not be involved in Europe next year.

The Europa League presented Arteta with a good opportunity to put more faith in younger players.

Someone like Emile Smith Rowe made a real impact in the competition. And now, it is hard to imagine the attacking midfielder missing a game for the Gunners.

Of course, there are other youngsters knocking on the door. Someone like Miguel Azeez may set his sights on a real breakout year.

But Patino would also have to be considered.

Admittedly, Arsenal will be wary of rushing him – the good news is he looks to be getting closer to that chance.
