Report: Arsenal target Sergi Roberto holds contract talks with Barcelona
Sergi Roberto may be set for a dramatic u-turn that involves staying at Barcelona beyond this season – in news that may certainly alert Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.
Reports in February claimed that the Gunners wanted Roberto. His current contract at the Nou Camp is up at the end of the campaign. And it was suggested that no fresh talks were planned with Barca.
However, almost two months later, it would appear that Roberto staying at Barcelona is looking increasingly likely. that the two parties met on Tuesday to discuss a renewal.
It is noted that Xavi could be crucial in the 30-year-old staying. Sport suggests that he has made it clear that he wants to hold onto the versatile Spaniard.
And talks are now back on the agenda.
What will give Arsenal hope is that it will still not be easy for Barcelona to reach an agreement with Roberto. But clearly, it is now looking a lot more likely that he will be staying in Catalonia.
Arsenal unlikely to have made Sergi Roberto a priority anyway
Roberto has enjoyed a very good career to date. He has made well over 300 appearances for Barca in all competitions. And he has enjoyed some incredible moments.
Lionel Messi actually once described him as ‘‘. And on a free transfer, he could prove to be a very smart signing.
However, he has struggled with injury this term. And his versatility has probably counted against him. He has never quite been able to establish himself in one role in the side.
So it would be a shock if Arsenal were prioritising a move for Roberto. They will have other options in mind. And they will move on swiftly if he does indeed end up signing a new contract with Barca.
