He has generally been a regular fixture in the PSG squad since his arrival. However, he has struggled to replicate the form that prompted Jurgen Klopp to label him a ‘‘ footballer.

And it appears that his spell in the French capital could be brief. TEAMtalk reports that Wijnaldum is planning to consider his options at the end of the season.

A Premier League return would be his preferred move should he leave this summer. Arsenal, Newcastle and West Ham are all monitoring the situation with Wijnaldum, .

Of course, much may also depend on what the future holds for Mauricio Pochettino. Parc des Princes after a mixed campaign. So obviously, Wijnaldum may want to see who succeeds Pochettino – if he does go – and how PSG look to move forward before making a decision.

Wijnaldum could be a smart signing for Arsenal if they secure Champions League return

Signing Wijnaldum could appear to be a gamble for a club like Arsenal. They have had real success when signing younger players with a point to prove in the last 12 months. And they have clearly benefitted from moving away from a strategy of signing more experienced players.

Wijnaldum turns 32 in November. Having said that, he could prove to be an inspired signing if PSG are open to cashing in.

If they do not demand a huge sum, he could be a great addition – if Arsenal qualify for next year’s Champions League. He has made nearly 50 appearances in the competition. And of course, he won it with Liverpool.

The majority of Arsenal’s business will surely see them stick to the model that has worked so well this season. But adding a couple of experienced options may also be a smart move if they are back in Europe.

And few have a better track record than Wijnaldum.
