Report: Arsenal “quietly optimistic” about making three more signings
According to a report in the , Arsenal are “quietly optimistic” about making up to three more signings this summer. This includes striking deals to bring both Kieran Tierney and Wilfried Zaha to the Emirates Stadium. However, the identity of the potential third arrival remains a mystery.
The Gunners have already confirmed three signings in this transfer window. 18-year-old Brazilian prospect Gabriel Martinelli arrived from Ituano. This was followed by the capture of midfielder Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid. The signing of centre-back William Saliba, who immediately returned to Saint Etienne on loan, came soon after.
However, considering Arsenal fell short of Champions League qualification last season, it is vitally important that Unai Emery significantly strengthens his squad this summer. Celtic left-back Tierney and Crystal Palace winger Zaha would certainly effectively bolster the Spanish coach’s ranks.

If Arsenal are then able to get another deal over the line, it should be to bring in a reliable centre-back. Club captain have put his future in north London in doubt. On top of that, Shkodran Mustafi has proven himself to be short of the standard required at the club. Rob Holding is also yet to return to full fitness following a serious injury last season.
With all that taken into account, Arsenal are short on both numbers and quality in the heart of their defence. Addressing this deficiency has to be a priority for Emery. Fans will hope that the potential third signing referred to in the aforementioned report means that a new centre-back is on the agenda.
However, the Independent also state that 19-year-old academy centre-back Zech Medley is expected to be promoted to the first team.
