A shock report from has claimed that Arsenal have enquired about signing Diego Costa on a free transfer.

Yep, you read that right. The same Diego Costa who tormented Gabriel Paulista in a game at Stamford Bridge all those years ago.

The Gunners are in need of a new striker. Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang’s Arsenal career looks like it’s over, while both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah have entered the final six months of their contracts.

Dusan Vlahovic is reportedly Arsenal’s number one target, which makes these new links to someone like Costa very bizarre.

Costa currently plays for Atlético Mineiro in Brazil but he is reportedly in discussions to terminate his contract there.

The report claims he’s currently on holiday in Spain and has received offers from a number of clubs across the globe. One such team is Arsenal, who according to the news outlet, made ‘informal consultation’ to learn about the player’s plans.

It is also claimed that Costa is attracting interest from Corinthians, who are on the lookout for a new striker too. However, nothing can be done until his contract is officially terminated by Atletico Mineiro.

Are the Gunners really interested in Costa?

Back in the summer of 2014, before Costa moved from Atletico Madrid to Chelsea, some Arsenal fans would’ve loved to have him. He was fantastic back then and played a big part in helping the Blues win the Premier League.

Now-Spurs boss Antonio Conte even labelled him as a ‘‘ back in 2016, but almost six years on now, he’s not a player good enough for a club like Arsenal, or any other side in the Premier League for that matter.

The Gunners’ new transfer policy also goes completely against signing players like Costa, who is 33 already. That makes this deal about as likely as Arsenal signing Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland before kickoff at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow.
