Arsenal transfer: Gunners reportedly make defiant stance over midfielder

Arsenal have delivered a resounding message to both Roma and Juventus over Granit Xhaka. The Gunners have informed the interested parties that he will only leave for a fee of £17.5 million,

Jose Mourinho is getting his feet under the table at Roma. He has identified the Arsenal midfielder as a potential signing. A solid Euro 2020 has now seen Juventus come forward, however.

It has previously been claimed that a fee of around £13 million with performance-related add ons was on the table. Now, Arsenal have changed their stance and want a full payment ahead of any deal.

Xhaka has spent five years at Arsenal. During Mikel Arteta’s tenure at the club, he has rediscovered himself and become a crucial player. Last season, he played 45 games in all competitions, registering two assists.

The Gunners are now eyeing reinforcements though. Ruben Neves is one midfielder who has been linked, with Yves Bissouma is also a long-term target.

Xhaka has just two years remaining on his contract. With that in mind, coupled with the fact that he’s 28, the Gunners clearly feel now is the right time to let him leave.

Theplayer starred at the European Championships. He was part of the team that sent France, the world champions, packing at the round of 16 stage of the competition.

His yellow card in that game saw him banned for the quarter-final. Another penalty shootout saw the Swiss depart the competitions, losing to Spain.

Arsenal taking the right stance over Xhaka

Although the Gunners are perhaps right to offload the midfielder, they certainly shouldn’t be letting him leave on the cheap.

His performances at Euro 2020 have probably helped. It means the club are now firmly within their rights to ask for a bigger payment upfront.

The Gunners are keen to reshuffle the squad and it does seem as though Arteta is planning for life without his midfielder.

Now, the ball is in the court of Juventus and Roma as to whether or not they’ll stump up the relevant cash to prise Xhaka away from the Emirates Stadium.
