Report: Arsenal in talks over ‘excellent’ left-back, Manchester City also linked

Arsenal have reportedly ramped up their interest in Ryan Bertrand amid interest from Manchester City, according to the .

The outlet claims that the Gunners are in the market for a left-back this summer and hoping to beat a number of clubs, including Pep Guardiola’s side, to land Bertrand.

Arsenal will finish this season with Kieran Tierney as their only senior left-back, having allowed Sead Kolasinac to rejoin Schalke on loan in January.

Meanwhile, Bertrand is set to leave Southampton when his contract expires at the end of the season, bringing an end to a seven-year spell on the south coast.

And according to the , talks between Arsenal and the 31-year-old’s camp have intensified over the past few days.

Bertrand was previously on Chelsea’s books but spent much of his time on their books away on loan, and went on to seal a move to Southampton in 2014.

He has made 240 appearances to date for Saints, scoring eight goals and registering 20 assists, and has also won 19 caps for England.

A talented, experienced and home-grown player, Bertrand isn’t a bad shout for Arsenal, who could really do with competition and cover for Tierney on the left of defence.

In an article from 2018 about the state of left-backs in England, Michael Cox wrote that the “only real star is Ryan Bertrand, a truly excellent full-back defensively and offensively”.

And if Manchester City and Leicester City are also reportedly after him, that shows just how highly rated he is.
