Report: Arsenal handed boost in pursuit of player once deemed the ‘best defender in the world’

Arsenal have reportedly been handed a boost in their pursuit of Jerome Boateng, who looks set to become a free agent this summer.

According to , Bayern Munich are unlikely to offer the 32-year-old a contract extension, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.

Arsenal were linked with Boateng in 2020, as were Chelsea, and has linked the two once again amid the latest report on the defender’s future.

However, both London sides could apparently have to contend with interest from Italy’s Serie A in the 76-cap Germany international.

Boateng has made 27 competitive appearances for Bayern this season and 351 overall since his move from Manchester City in 2011.

However, Bayern are said to be prioritising a new deal for Boateng’s defensive teammate Niklas Sule, who has just over a year left on his contract.

This has reportedly left Boateng feeling under-appreciated and, although he’s apparently still hoping for a new deal, it looks increasingly likely that he’ll be on the move.

TBR View:

Boateng is a player of the highest calibre, who Bayern legend Mathias Sammer the “best defender in the worldin 2015.

Should the Bavarians opt not to renew his contract, he’s bound to have a lot of interest from teams across Europe.

With David Luiz’s Arsenal future uncertain, could the Gunners look to bring another experienced defender to North London?
