Report: Arsenal face uphill battle to shift Mustafi

According to , Arsenal are struggling to secure a departure from the club for Shkodran Mustafi this summer. The German defender is not considered to be up to the standard required at the Emirates Stadium, and Unai Emery is keen to offload him. However, the 27-year-old is thought to be happy at Arsenal and unwilling to move on.

The 20-cap Germany international joined the north London outfit in 2016. Arsenal signed him from Valencia for a fee in excess of £35 million, as reported by the . However, the centre-back has since failed to live up to his price tag. Mustafi’s form is inconsistent and he is highly error-prone. Emery now appears to have lost patience with the defender and wants him gone.

Moving Mustafi on this summer will be easier said that done though. For a start, finding viable suitors could be tricky. Mustafi’s reputation has been damaged by his poor performances for Arsenal. What’s more, his £90,000-a-week wages (according to ) could put potential buyers off. Mustafi is unlikely to be open to taking a pay cut at this stage in his career.

Mustafi is settled in London and has two years left to run on his current deal with the Gunners. On top of that, Emery’s side is light on numbers at the back, which means Mustafi is practically guaranteed plenty of game time by virtue of the fact that there are few alternatives.

It would certainly be in Arsenal’s best interests to move Mustafi on this summer, but the odds are against them.
