Report: Arsenal enquire about Matthias Ginter; but move looking unlikely

Arsenal and Chelsea have both asked about Matthias Ginter, , but it appears that a future move for the centre-back is looking unlikely.

Ginter has made 31 appearances for Borussia Monchengladbach this past season, while he also appeared four times in the Europa League.

Only Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig kept a better defensive record than Gladbach in the top flight. And it appears that they will now face a fight to keep hold of Ginter.

Sky Germany reports that both Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid want the 26-year-old, who was an unused member of Germany’s victorious squad at the 2014 World Cup.

But there are also Premier League clubs looking at Ginter.

that both Arsenal and Chelsea have both made contact about a potential move.

However, it appears that fans should perhaps not expect Ginter to arrive in England anytime soon.

The report notes that the Gunners and Blues asked about whether Ginter will be available on a free transfer next summer.

But Sky Germany reports that his contract will automatically extend by a further year should he play 25 games next season. It is also suggested that he is already in talks with his current side over a potential contract extension.

TBR View: Arsenal need to strengthen at the back

It would be little surprise to see Mikel Arteta prioritise signing a new defender this summer. The likes of Pablo Mari, Calum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi had their campaigns ended prematurely due to injury.

And it is surely fair to say that Arteta did not have two centre-backs really seize the opportunity to put themselves amongst the first names on the team sheet ahead of his first full season at the Emirates.

It appears that Arsenal were not looking at signing Ginter for this summer. But, with a move reportedly looking unlikely for next year, perhaps Arteta should consider whether a change of plan is required.
