Report: Arsenal discussed swap deal in Nuno Tavares pursuit

Arsenal discussed Matteo Guendouzi moving in a swap deal as part of the talks that look set to result in Nuno Tavares moving to the Emirates in the transfer window, .

Tavares looks to be set to be the first signing through the door in this window. It was reported on Wednesday that his medical was hours away. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old is apparently set to see his wages tripled.

that Arsenal will pay an initial £6.9 million for the left-back.

However, it appears that the deal could have been structured quite differently.

According to the Guardian, the idea of putting together a swap deal involving Guendouzi came up in talks.

The Portuguese side had been linked with Guendouzi earlier this summer.

But the Guardian claims that Guendouzi would prefer to join Marseille.

Swap deal could have proved too much of a complication in Arsenal bid to land Tavares

Initially, it is easy to think that a swap deal makes real sense. Guendouzi looks to have no future in North London. And Tavares is clearly a target the Gunners are very keen on.

However, Guendouzi – who earns £40,000-a-week, – has been linked with a host of clubs. It was previously claimed that 12 side had made approaches. So a departure is surely likely.

It therefore, would have only made Arsenal’s bid to sign Tavares more complicated if they had pursued a swap involving Guendouzi.

Keeping their futures separate looks to have been the right play.
