Arsenal are reportedly plotting a bid for Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo ‘in the coming days’.

The Gunners are said to be in pursuit of a left-sided defender this summer.

Arsenal were reportedly trying to sign Aaron Hickey, but Brentford are apparently closing in on him.

Now, reports in Portugal have suggested that the Gunners are stepping up their interest in Grimaldo.

Indeed, the Gunners could make a concrete offer for Grimaldo ‘in the coming days’.

The 26-year-old’s Benfica contract runs out next summer.

Therefore, Grimaldo’s club ‘do not close the door’ to a deal, as they want to avoid losing him for free.

Apparently, Arsenal have ‘identified’ the player as a ‘safe bet’ for a reasonable price.

Sport Witness cites recent reports from the Portuguese media claiming Grimaldo has a €7.5m (£6.4m) price tag.

Grimaldo has developed into one of the Primeira Liga’s finest assets.

He has bagged 14 goals and 40 assists from 143 top flight appearances in Portugal.

In his most recent season, Grimaldo provided 10 goal contributions in just 28 outings.

Given Kieran Tierney is first choice at Arsenal, whoever comes in would likely be a deputy.

And for less than £7m, Grimaldo wouldn’t be a bad shout for the Gunners.
