Report: Another name added to Newcastle manager shortlist, had 62% win rate

Newcastle United’s new owners have now added a new name to their manager shortlist – in the form of out-of-work Lucien Favre.

Favre, 63, is out of work since impressing as Borussia Dortmund gaffer. He spent two and a half years at Dortmund, leaving in December 2020.

The Frenchman has an impressive background. Starring in Switzerland in his first roles, he won the league twice with Zurich – before Hertha Berlin.

His 40 wins from 94 games at Hertha in two years saw Gladbach chance their arm. He spent four years in the hotseat, before moving to Nice.

Another decent spell at Nice was then followed by his stint at Dortmund, where his win rate was a huge 62% – winning 68 of 110 games.

Plenty of other managers have been linked, too. Brendan Rodgers and Steven Gerrard, as well as Antonio Conte, Graham Potter and more.

Favre to Newcastle: Not glamorous, but owners could do a lot worse

While the experienced Frenchman is hardly the glitzy, big-name appointment fans might want, he would be a brilliant appointment.

Having become the subject of the world’s richest football club owners, many are hoping for a Conte – or someone of the like.

But Conte has found most of his success with some of Europe’s best squads. Inter last season, for example, and Chelsea – when he won the title.

At a side in the midst of a relegation battle, he might be fighting on new ground. Favre, meanwhile, has managed sides lower down.

Favre might not be the manager the new owners of Newcastle want indefinitely, but he could be the stepping stone to getting a boss like Conte.
