Report: 90-cap Arsenal man offered captaincy by club wanting to buy him, awaiting his response
Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has been offered a contract by Genoa as well as the team captaincy, according to .
The 32-year-old’s contract at the Emirates Stadium is set to expire in the summer and the Gunners are looking to cash-in during the January transfer window.
Sokratis joined Arsenal in 2018 from Borussia Dortmund and he has made 69 competitive appearances for the North Londoners.

However, the 90-cap Greece international is surplus to Mikel Arteta’s requirements – .
Genoa, meanwhile, have reportedly turned their attentions to Sokratis – who played for them from 2008 to 2010 – after abandoning their pursuit for Lazio defender Denis Vavro.
And according to , the Serie A strugglers have offered him a two-and-a-half-year contract as well as the captain’s armband, and they’re awaiting his response.
TBR View:
With Sokratis being omitted from Arteta’s Premier League and Europa League squads, not to mention his expiring contract, it’s almost certain that he’s played his last game for the Gunners.
Genoa, meanwhile, appear really eager to bring him on board – and given his talent and experience, why not? He’d certainly do a good job for them, and would be just the kind of player to help them battle relegation.
