Report: 33-year-old rejects Celtic contract

that Emilio Izaguirre has rejected the chance to remain at Celtic for another 12 months, by rejecting the Scottish champions’ contract offer.

The 33-year-old is out of contract at Parkhead at the moment, and only managed 19 appearances in all competitions this season. Only 12 of those came in the Scottish Premiership for the 101-time Honduras international.

Neil Lennon has been given the permanent Celtic job after the club completed the treble treble and won the Scottish Cup with a 2-1 win over Hearts last weekend. Now, he can focus on work in the transfer market.

It is believed that Izaguirre has been offered a new contract, but has decided to reject it. Instead, he has informed his agent, Paulo Hernandez, to find him a new club in the MLS or indeed another team in Europe.

TBR’s view

Celtic need cover at left-back, and did so anyway. Izaguirre was not good enough when he did play for Celtic this season, certainly some way off Kieran Tierney.

Calvin Miller is Celtic’s only other left-back but he is a long way off Tierney’s standard. Callum McGregor can play on the left side of defence but his excellent form in midfield means that a new left-sided defender is needed.

Izaguirre needed replacing, and now it is clear that Celtic must do so.
