Report: £21m centre-back emerges as Newcastle target in last 24 hours

Newcastle United plan to turn their attention to their centre-back options as they close in on Chris Wood, that they have learned in the last 24 hours that Gleison Bremer has moved onto their radar.

The Magpies have been one of the busier Premier League sides in the opening half of the window. Kieran Trippier has already arrived on Tyneside. And Wood looks set to follow.

Unsurprisingly, Eddie Howe’s next priority looks set to be strengthening the heart of the defence. that Bremer has emerged as a target in the last 24 hours.

The Mail notes that Inter Milan also want the 24-year-old. He has previously been linked with Tottenham and Chelsea.

Newcastle signing Gleison Bremer would see Magpies seal their best deal yet

Bremer has established himself as one of the most impressive defenders in Serie A with Torino. And previous reports have suggested that he could cost just £21 million.

His statistics this season are outstanding. No player in Italy’s top-flight has made more interceptions than the 80 Bremer has managed, . Meanwhile, only two have made more blocks. And he is nine clear of anyone else when it comes to clearances.

Bremer is also someone who contributes at the opposite end of the field. Joelinton – who has looked a different player in recent weeks – has scored seven times in 87 Premier League games since his move to Tyneside. Bremer meanwhile, has 10 in 84 in Serie A from centre-back.

It remains to be seen what Bremer makes of Newcastle’s interest. He will surely have major reservations however. He is wanted by clubs such as Chelsea and Tottenham.

So the Magpies surely face an extremely tough task trying to convince him to follow Trippier and Wood – – through the St James’ Park door.
