‘Regular tactic’: Alan Shearer thinks £20m Newcastle United player is going to keep getting subbed off this season
Wilson scored Newcastle’s second goal as they took a 3-1 lead against Manchester City, but couldn’t hold on for three points and eventually had to settle for a draw.
“Wilson mentioned in the matchday programme about breaking back into the England squad and that has to be his aim.

“Harry Kane is the striker that will play in Qatar but there are places up for grabs behind him.
“We know Wilson will score goals and that he is a really good player; the one issue you have is his fitness.
“The manager took him off with 15-20 minutes to go against City and that might become a regular tactic to save him from getting injuries in the last portion of the match when he is tired and the muscles are fatiguing.”
Shearer thinks Wilson will keep being substituted
Callum Wilson hasn’t had the best of luck against Manchester City in his career.
In seven previous matches against Pep Guardiola’s side, Wilson had scored just once and lost every meeting with the Premier League champions.

However, a fantastically taken goal, shifting the ball with his first touch to knock the Man City defenders off balance, before using the outside of his right foot to rifle the ball past Ederson, finally ended his losing streak.
Shearer’s comments about Wilson being in contention for the World Cup weren’t made in isolation either, with Micah Richards also believing the 30-year-old should be considered for Qatar.
If Shearer is correct and Wilson is going keep being substituted regularly by Eddie Howe, he’s likely to want a better player off the bench than Chris Wood, who has struggled to make an impact since joining from Burnley.

Newcastle have also been offered Mauro Icardi, although like Wood he may struggle to keep up with Howe’s dynamic, direct attack.
Wilson’s fitness is likely to be one of the key factors that decide where Newcastle end up this season, but he’s already started brightly and Howe will have to manage his minutes wisely to get the best out of the England international.
