Reece James says 23-year-old attacker Tottenham want to sign is one of the best players he’s ever faced

Chelsea defender Reece James has lavished praise on reported Tottenham Hotspur target Rafael Leao.

Leao is currently at the World Cup with Portugal, who currently have six points to their name and he scored as a substitute in their win over Ghana.

James has of course been ruled out of the tournament through injury, with Gareth Southgate taking Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier instead.

On , James was asked to name the toughest players he has played against in his career so far, and named Leao among them.

James hails Leao

He put him in some strong company, alongside Champions League final goalscorer Vinicius Junior and Sadio Mane who was playing on the other side that night for Liverpool.

Vinicius has taken on the mantle for Brazil in the absence of Neymar, while Mane, like James was cruelly ruled out of the tournament through injury.

Leao faced James in the Champions League this season as Chelsea came out winners in both group games, and is also a target for the Blues.

Leao has also been linked with a move to Spurs when the January transfer window opens and talks over a new Milan deal have stalled.

He’s recently been linked with Liverpool too, although their immediate priority would appear to be midfield over anything else.

A good World Cup could push Leao’s profile and status to the next level and he will be hoping to play a part in Portugal lifting the trophy.
