‘Really, really clever’: Antonio Conte seriously surprised and impressed by Tottenham 21-year-old

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has hailed youngsters Pape Matar Sarr and Harvey White.

Ahead of the clash with Aston Villa, Conte was asked at his if any players had surprised him during the World Cup break.

Sarr was at the tournament with Senegal, where he came on against England in their 3-0 defeat in the round of 16.

21-year-old White was at the club and Conte said that the academy graduate had shocked and impressed him with his intelligence and versatility.

Conte praises Sarr and White

Conte said: “For sure, you’re right. It was a great opportunity for me and my staff to work with the players, especially with the young players that didn’t play in the World Cup.

“To work with Pape Sarr, he played in the World Cup but then he came back two weeks before and worked with us. I think Pape Sarr is a really good prospect and I like the two weeks we worked after the World Cup with him.

“Also Harvey White was a good surprise because we are talking about a young player, but really, really clever, a player that I can ask him to play in every position and he is good to do it.”

The problem for the Spurs prospects is that Conte is a win-now manager who generally prefers experienced players and short-term goals.

That means that it will be really hard for the likes of Sarr and White to establish themselves in the Spurs side while Conte is in charge.

But if they can impress such a demanding manager then it bodes well for their budding careers, even if a loan spell might be next up for one or both of them.
