‘Really interesting one’: Celtic legend Sutton hails English candidate to replace Lennon
Chris Sutton has tipped Sean Dyche as a potential successor to Neil Lennon.
The former Celtic man has watched as last season’s champions lurched from crisis to crisis this season. exiting three cups and letting their 10-in-a-row dreams die with barely a whimper.
He was among many who called for his former team-mate to leave the club, and Lennon’s resignation was eventually confirmed in February.
John Kennedy has been installed as interim manager for the time being, with names such as Enzo Maresca, Eddie Howe and Steve Clarke being mentioned in connection with the vacancy.
Sutton, however, has talked up a potential move for Burnley boss Dyche, who has been at Turf Moor for over eight years.
In his time at the club, the former Chesterfield and Watford centre-back has achieved promotion to the Premier League, where they have remained for five years, as well as Europa League qualification in 2018.
Speaking on the , Sutton suggested the 49-year-old would be a good it at Celtic Park.
He said: “I do think that Sean Dyche really deserves to be given an opportunity, and I’m not saying Burnley’s not a big club, but at a bigger club than Burnley.
“And it’s where or not he’s had enough of the Burnley project. I think he’s a really interesting one, because he gets tarred with this brush that Burnley are just a ‘lump it’ team.
“But he has worked wonders at Burnley, on a small, small budget. I know they went down when he first went in, but they bounced back, got them back up, and he built and structured a club who are now regulars in the Premier League.
“I think that’s an amazing achievement, and the fact that he’s organised the team so well.
“He needs eventually to be given an opportunity at a bigger club, and he’s not a dafty Sean Dyche.
“He’ll understand about brands of football and whatever, but given the correct tools then I’m sure he would do really well at Celtic.”
