Real Sociedad president shares Martin Zubimendi contract update after claims Liverpool are eyeing 2025 move

Liverpool were frustrated in their efforts to sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer transfer window as the Real Sociedad midfielder opted to remain at his boyhood club.

Arne Slot felt Zubimendi would be the perfect candidate to shine as a number six for the Reds and the Spaniard was even tempted by the possibility of moving to Anfield.

However, with Mikel Merino joining Arsenal and Robin Le Normand moving to Atletico Madrid, Zubimendi was convinced to snub advances from Anfield by the Sociedad hierarchy.

There have been reports that Liverpool could rekindle a move for Zubimendi in 2025, indicating that the transfer saga is far from over.

And now, Real Sociedad President Jokin Aperribay has provided an update on his contract situation at the club.

After rejecting a move to Liverpool, reports from Spain suggested Zubimendi would be offered a new deal at Sociedad, making him the highest-paid player at the club.

Aperribay has refuted such claims, confirming that talks over a new contract never happened despite the drawn-out transfer saga.

“There has been no conversation with Zubimendi to renew the contract,” Aperribay said via .

“There has not been now and there has not been before. He did not put any conditions on us.

“He understood the moment and knew that it was a market in which some players were already going to leave, and he understood that it was time to stay at Real Sociedad.

“He has not put a renewal as a condition nor have we talked about it. The conversation with Martín was short and quick.”

Liverpool could move for Zubimendi again in 2025

Liverpool have shown in the past that they would wait for their long-term transfer targets – as was the case with Virgil van Dijk in 2017.

Slot refrained from pursuing alternatives to Zubimendi after missing out on him and is currently using Ryan Gravenberch in that position.

The Dutchman has started the season in fine form, but if Zubimendi were to become available in the upcoming transfer windows, the Reds could move for him.

It remains to be seen what happens, but it doesn’t appear as if Liverpool have shut the door on Spanish international.
