Real Salt Lake 2 Chivas USA 1 23 October
The home side ended their MLS regular season schedule by extending their unbeaten run to four games as they swept the season series with Chivas after they had won 1-0 here in April and 4-1 in California in May. The victory moves the home side to the top of the Western Conference, two points clear of Portland, who play their final league game on Saturday and guarantees them a top two finish. In the race for the Supporters Shield, the result draws them level on points with New York, fifty-six and also for total wins, sixteen, but RSL have scored four more goals than the Red Bulls, which is the second tie-breaker, who end their campaign on Sunday. After a scoreless opening half were chances for either side were few and far between the home side took the lead 4 minutes after the restart. Chivas midfielder Edgar Mejia was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area and referee Silviu Petrescu had no hesitation in pointing to the penaltꦓy spot. Striker Alvaro Saborio confidently stepped up and drilled the ball to the right side of the target as Chivas goalkeeper Tim Melia dove the other way. 3 minutes later and Real Salt Lake had doubled their advantage. Forward Joao Plata was in the right place at the right time as the ball rebounded conveniently to him after team-mate Javier Morales, who had come on at the start of the second stanza for Yordany Alvarez, was dispossessed and he berried the chance from 20 yards out catching keeper Melia off guard. Despite creating chance after chance for the next 15 minutes the hosts were forced to live on their nerves slightly after their lead was halved with 13 minutes remaining. Julio Morales, who had only taken the place of Bryan de la Fuente 1 minute previous, went past defender Tony Beltran, who was an early substitute for Lovel Palmer who only lasted 9 minutes and then kept his composer to slide the ball past goalkeeper Nick Rimando. That was as close as the visitors would get though and this reversal was their fourth loss on the bounce.
