Ray Parlour tells Mikel Arteta that Arsenal must avoid £21m transfer, ‘spend their money elsewhere’

Arsenal have had an active 2025 summer transfer window so far, but one player linked to the Gunners should be avoided, according to Ray Parlour.

So far, the North London outfit have completed deals for three players in the current window.

Further transfers should be made in the coming weeks, with Arsenal opting to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting.

Gyokeres’ agents are in London ahead of the former Coventry City man completing his move to the Emirates.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are signing Noni Madueke from Chelsea, following a long list of names to swap Stamford Bridge for the Gunners.

Fans are not happy about Madueke signing, while another potential target of Mikel Arteta’s is also one to avoid, according to Ray Parlour.

Arsenal told to avoid Joao Palhinha transfer

German football journalist Christian Falk has claimed this week that Arsenal have made an approach for Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha.

He said in his  column: “Arsenal made a concrete approach for Joao Palhinha, as we exclusively reported on CF Bayern Insider on Thursday.

“So there’s still the possibility of selling him this summer. The price is going down and down – €25m [£21.6m], perhaps €30m [£25.9m], but that’s it.”

Now, former midfielder Parlour, who played over 300 games for Arsenal, has urged Arteta to avoid the deal.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “He was very good at Fulham, he’s gone to Bayern Munich, big money move, but I don’t think they need him.

“He’s a player that they’ve got, Zubimendi coming in in central midfield who’s going to be that holding player.  And they’ve got Norgaard, who [is] really good cover, very experienced player, captain at Brentford, so he knows how to deal in Premier League games, been there many, many years.

“So for me, Palhinha, I’m not saying he’s a bad player, good player, but I don’t think they need it. Spend their money elsewhere.”

Joao Palhinha quizzed on future

Palhinha spent two years in the Premier League with Fulham after signing from Sporting in 2022.

He’s since struggled for regular starts at Bayern Munich, playing 667 minutes in the Bundesliga last term across 17 outings.

But speaking ahead of Bayern’s return to pre-season, he said he is motivated to prove himself in Germany.

The ex-Fulham man stated, as quoted by : “I have a contract for three more years, so I’ll report for duty on July 29, which is when we start this pre-season.

“As I’ve said several times, and it’s been a recurring question, I have three more years on my contract,” added the former Fulham ace. “I don’t know what will happen, but I’m at a great club, as I’ve always said.

“Obviously, it hasn’t been an easy year, but as soon as the season starts, I’m very motivated to prove my worth once again at a very special club, a huge club.”
