Rating every Aston Villa signing this summer transfer window as two deals get 10/10
Aston Villa were one of the biggest spenders in the transfer window.
The Villans outlaid £148m on seven new signings with Unai Emery clearly eager to bolster his ranks ahead of a Champions League campaign.
So with that said, TBR Football has ranked every transfer out of 10 based on the following factors:
- Transfer fee
- Expected impact
- Vision (short, medium or long-term planning?)

Amadou Onana (£49.9m) – 10/10
Amadou Onana was Aston Villa’s most expensive arrival of the window and he’s already making a real impact.
The 2001-born has netted two goals in his first three outings and could be Villa’s talisman for the next decade.
Absolutely brilliant business and for a pretty reasonable fee, too.
Ian Maatsen (£37.4m) – 8/10
Ian Maatsen enjoyed a really productive loan spell at Borussia Dortmund last season and played in the Champions League final.
So, quite clearly, Villa have signed a top-level left-back who could be a mainstay for the next decade given he only turned 22 in March.
A little pricey but nonetheless, a smart pickup.
Jaden Philogene (£13.4m) – 7/10
Having departed for Hull City in a £5m deal last summer, Jaden Philogene returned for more than double that fee in July.
That alone brings the rating down a tad but as a player, Philogene will be a brilliant playmaker for Emery, should he be given the opportunity.
Samuel Iling-Junior (£11.7m) – 6/10
Involved in the swap deal with Douglas Luiz, Samuel Iling-Junior joins with promise but won’t make an immediate impact at Villa Park having been shipped out on loan to Bologna.
Aged only 20, the winger has plenty of time to repay his fee.
Lewis Dobbin (£9.9m) – 5/10
Lewis Dobbin was another who was part of a swap deal, this time with Onana.
Dobbin has already departed for West Bromwich Albion on loan, where he is yet to get off the mark in five outings.
He seems a long way away from Emery’s first-team set-up…
Enzo Barrenechea (£6.7m) – 6/10
Enzo Barrenechea, like Iling-Junior, joined from Juventus with Luiz heading the other way.
£6.7m is no fee in the modern Premier League, so it’s steady business from sporting director Monchi.
Ross Barkley (£4.9m) – 10/10
Joining Onana in the 10 out of 10 club is Ross Barkley, who flourished for Luton Town in the Premier League last season.
Barkley’s technical ability places him among the best in Emery’s squad and for just £4.9m, it’s a no-risk deal with a significant upside.
Take a bow, Monchi.
