Ranking Aston Villa’s 2019 summer signings from worst to best
A host of new faces walked through the door this summer at Aston Villa.
In total 12 deals were done, with Kortney Hause, Tyrone Mings and Anwar El Ghazi all making their loan moves permanent.
It’s been a mixed season so far, but how do the signings rank from worst to best?
#12 Kortney Hause
Hause hasn’t seen the amount of game time he would have liked so far, with Tyrone Mings, Bjorn Engels and Ezri Konsa all ahead of him in the pecking order.
#11 Jota
Jota was signed by Villa from Midlands rivals Birmingham City in the summer, but has so far failed to make much of an impression.
He’ll get more game time as the season wears on, but for now there hasn’t been much for fans to shout about.
#10 Wesley
The club’s new £22 million record-signing () has found life in English football tough so far.
The Brazilian features in an attack-minded side but has failed to show a cutting edge in front of goal.
He’s bagged five goals which isn’t too bad, but fans have certainly been underwhelmed by the big man.
#9 Bjorn Engels
Started very brightly indeed, but the Belgian recently lost his place in the starting XI.
Perhaps he needs more time to adapt to the Premier League than was first thought.
#8 Marvelous Nakamba
Has brought some good energy to the Villa midfield but one gets the feeling he is still settling in England.
The combative star has the potential to be a fantastic signing and a real crowd favourite at Villa Park.
#7 Douglas Luiz
It makes sense to place him next to Nakamba as there hasn’t been an awful lot to separate the two new central midfielders.
Has shown superb technical quality at times and has a thunderous shot on him, but perhaps needs to work on the defensive side.
#6 Anwar El Ghazi
Has certainly played his part for Villa this season in terms of goals and assists.
Needs to work on his consistency.
#5 Ezri Konsa
Looks very solid, and is impressively comfortable with the ball at his feet.
Smith has surely found Tyrone Mings’ regular partner at the back.
#4 Trezeguet
Seems very popular with the fans.
Shades of Adama Traore in his first season at Wolves about him in that, he looks quite dangerous at times but things don’t always come off for him in the final third.
He’s a willing runner, which supporters appreciate, and there is certainly a player in there. If he works hard he can perhaps become a real asset just like the Spaniard at Molineux.
#3 Matt Targett
A couple of poor displays recently but largely a solid start to life at Aston Villa for Matt Targett.
The 24-year-old certainly knows how to cross a ball and should end the season with a few assists to his name.
Just needs to tighten up defensively.
#2 Tyrone Mings
Started really solidly and was so impressive it lead to an England debut.
There were questions marks about his ability to lead the defence in the Premier League after doing well on loan in the Championship, but he’s made the sceptics look foolish.
The physically intimidating Mings can become a dominant force at the back for Villa.
#1 Tom Heaton
Villa fans were delighted with the £8 million capture of Tom Heaton in the summer () as they felt his Premier League experience would be invaluable.
That has certainly been the case. Villa have leaked goals, but goalkeeper Heaton has been a pillar of consistency.
He often keeps Smith’s men in games when maybe opponents should have been out of sight.
This is a signing that, plain and simply, could mean Villa stave off relegation come May.
