Ranieri must resist temptation to turn to Leicester old boys to help Fulham survive
According to , new Fulham manager Claudio Ranieri is set to turn to some of the players he knows so well from Leicester City’s historic Premier League title win in 2015/16 to boost the Cottagers’ survival bid.
Danny Drinkwater, Danny Simpson, Shinji Okasaki, Christian Fuchs and Robert Huth are all as options for Ranieri as he seeks to haul Fulham in his direction after the summer recruitment drive failed to stop the club falling into relegation peril.
But the contrast between the style of play that got Fulham into the top flight and the one that clinched Leicester the title could hardly be more stark.
The experienced names have now slipped down the pecking order at the King Power – or in the case of Huth, been released – which shows how much their level has dropped since their title triumph.
It is understandable that Ranieri will want to reach for players he can trust but they need to be at the right level to help Fulham, and fit into their style of play and it is debatable whether many of the targets fit the bill.
Perhaps Drinkwater would be the best fit and some experienced defenders could be useful, but it is impossible to ignore the clash of styles that could be created if the Italian gets these short-termist targets.
