Rangers reportedly close to signing Martin Skrtel but he’d be a completely pointless addition

Since Steven Gerrard arrived at Rangers the club has constantly been linked with a move for Martin Skrtel.

The pair enjoyed a spell as team-mates at Liverpool and the Gers boss must be tired of the constant speculation pinning the Slovakian to Ibrox.

Speculation has started once again.

Rangers are ‘close’ to signing the Fenerbahce defender.

Given the constant news touting Skrtel to the Scottish club, it should perhaps be taken with a pinch of salt.

The signing of the centre-back just looks pointless right now.

Gerrard has worked tirelessly during the summer to bolster his squad and currently, it is in a healthy state.

Several decent players have been added to the ranks, with one eye towards the future with several of the club’s new additions.

At central defence, there are no qualms at all.

George Edmondson, Nikola Katic, Filip Helander and Connor Goldson are currently battling it out for the two spots.

Skrtel at this moment in time would be more of a hinderance, whilst he would certainly hamper the progress of some of the younger players.

The man with 103 caps for his country would have been a brilliant addition this time last year.

In that time, Rangers might not have won anything, but Skrtel is a year older and quite simply Gerrard doesn’t need him.

Having spent three years in Turkey, the warrior won’t come cheap. At 34 he will be chasing one last payday and the Gers shouldn’t be the club to give it to him.

Rangers are in a good place right now and they don’t need any player coming to the club and rocking the boat.
