Rangers star suggests he had initial doubts about moving to Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers defender Leon Balogun has spoken of how big a role Steven Gerrard played in convincing him to move to Ibrox.

Last summer, the Gers boss signed the Nigeria international on a free transfer on a one-year deal with the option of another year.

For most of the season so far, Gerrard has been alternating between Balogun and Filip Helander in the back four to partner Connor Goldson.

The 32-year-old, who has also covered for James Tavernier at right-back, has made 28 competitive appearances for the Light Blues this season.

His contributions helped the Ibrox outfit clinch their 55th Scottish Premiership title, their first in 10 years.

Balogun suggested he initially had doubts about joining Rangers, but after speaking to Gerrard, was fully convinced to make the switch.

“When my advisor called me a year ago, he immediately said: ‘I have one thing here that is huge for you: the Rangers’,” he told .

“At first, I thought: Scottish League, well… but then I felt Steven Gerrard’s interest. I don’t mean to say that he chased me. But he really went out of his way to help me.

“I felt that he wanted me as a player, as a guy, as Leon Balogun. He said I was a perfect match for his game idea and the identity of the club. With every word, he convinced me even more.

“The goal was very clear that we had to win the title. Draws felt like defeat to us. You could feel the team’s mentality there.”

Prior to joining Rangers, Balogun was with English Football League side Wigan Athletic.
