Rangers should ask for Jonathan Leko in any James Tavernier deal
West Bromwich Albion are not ready to give up on Rangers full-back James Tavernier,
The report claims West Brom continue to watch the player, as they aim to plug their problem position at right-back. The Baggies made two bids in the summer for the defender and Darren Moore is ready to go again in January.
The report suggested Steven Gerrard will want a ‘shed-load’ of money for his Rangers captain and rightly so. The 26-year-old only signed a new deal until 2022 earlier this year.
But Rangers should also view this interest as an opportunity. With Jon Flanagan starting to find his form and fitness, they may already have a ready-made replacement. So, if West Brom fall short with the cash, maybe Rangers could ask for a player to be thrown into the mix.
One potential option would be the Baggies’ young attacker Jonathan Leko. The teenager made his Premier League debut for West Brom aged 16 and the sky appeared the limit after several impressive performances that season.
However, his progress at The Hawthorns has stalled and this season he has largely been used by the under-23 side.
The England youth star is, however, an incredible talent. His pace, strength and trickery have seen him used wide for much of his early career, but it is as a striker that Leko sees himself making it in the game.
Rangers could use a versatile forward. Umar Sadiq has struggled to be the back-up for Kyle Lafferty and Alfredo Morelos. Leko could be that and more.
Rangers lack striking options at Ibrox and Leko could be the perfect arrival. If West Brom throw him into any Tavernier deal, then Gerrard might have a decision to make.
