Rangers round-up: Windass blasts board, Cazorla on Gerrard and Lafferty chance

Windass blasts board

Former Rangers winger Josh Windass has taken a swipe at the Rangers board for selling him to Wigan Athletic.

, the 24-year-old has admitted he didn’t want to leave the Scottish giants.

He believes that in the end though, he had no choice as he didn’t feel wanted enough.

He said: “It was a strange one – I was just about to get on the bus for the Maribor game when I got a text from someone saying that Wigan had put a bid in and Rangers had accepted it.

“I don’t think it should have been accepted. I just got my stuff off the bus and drove down to Wigan to see what they had to say.”

Windass subsequently completed his move down south for a fee of £2 million on August 9.

Last term Windass scored 18 goals for Rangers and some were stung by his departure. It was certainly an eyebrow-raising move – Windass has a lot of ability and £2 million doesn’t seem a lot in today’s market.

Cazorla on Gerrard

Villarreal midfielder Santi Cazorla has had some kind words to say about Steve Gerrard ahead of the Europa League clash.

The ex-Arsenal man told reporters, : “Gerrard is a role model for me and always has been, so it’s special to face him again.

“I was lucky to come up against him when he was at Liverpool. He’s someone I have always admired and wish him all the luck as a manager but just not against us.”

Cazorla is the orchestrator of the Villarreal team and Lassana Coulibaly must keep tabs on the midfielder.

A chance for Lafferty?

With Alfredo Morelos suspended, it’s a great chance against Villarreal for Kyle Lafferty.

The summer signing from Hearts will be Gerrard’s go-to with Umar Sadiq unfancied so far.

He said, : “I want to put everything that’s gone wrong right in this game.

“Alfredo missing is a big blow but it gives me the chance to show the gaffer what I’m capable of doing and if I’m given the chance, put one away.

“Hopefully it goes our way and we get the result we all want.”
