Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has dropped a big hint to the that defender Nikola Katic will play a starring role next season.
Gerrard left the Croatian out of his squad for the defeat at Kilmarnock yesterday. Not featuring regularly has been the story of the season for Katic who has been a peripheral figure.
The central defender has started just 12 league games during 2018/19. Joe Worrall on loan from Nottingham Forest has typically been preferred to partner Connor Goldson at the back.
It would seem that Katic doesn’t need to worry, however, with Gerrard confirming his plans for his next season.

“I’ll take the hit for the number of changes made to the team today. Certainly, with Arfield and Katic, it was my decision. But, I need Katic and Arfield fresh and ready for 60 games next season. Getting them three weeks off was important.”
Rangers will kick off their Europa League qualifying campaign in early July.
TBR Verdict
Katic has been an interesting one to ponder this season. In the majority of games he has played he has looked a decent signing, but the game time hasn’t been forthcoming regularly.
The Croatian has played second fiddle to Joe Worrall and that hasn’t always been a popular decision with the Rangers supporters.

It looks like any disgruntled supporters will get their wish next season though. Gerrard’s comments after yesterday’s game offer a firm hint that he will be a regular starter during 2019/20.
Katic arrived from Slaven Belupo for £2 million and his performances, when called upon, have excited the club’s supporters.
The next campaign looks like being a big one for the uncompromising central defender.
