Rangers need to abandon plans to sign veteran players like Stewart Downing and Steven Davis
Stewart Downing is the latest player to be linked with a move to Rangers, . Steven Gerrard knows the veteran midfielder well from their time together at Liverpool and in the England national side.
Rangers face a battle with Sunderland to land the left-footed winger. But Gerrard should abandon this plan and completely change his transfer approach.
It is time for Rangers to stop signing players in their twilight years if they want to progress and narrow the gap on Celtic.
Rangers currently have Steven Davis on a six-month loan deal and could sign him on a free transfer this summer.
But Davis is 34 and Downing will be 35 by the time he pulls on a Rangers shirt. Gerrard needs to start targeting younger players.

Of course, there is a need to blend youth with experience. But the likes of Davis and Downing are well past their peak and on the decline.
With Allan McGregor (37), Jermain Defoe (36) and Gareth McAuley (39) on their books as well, Rangers have several players who are approaching retirement.
Downing would not be a sensible signing because he is at the end of his career and Davis is in the same boat.
Gerrard needs to look at players in their early 30s to provide the experience and then build his team around exciting younger options.
