Rangers might have the upper hand in Lawrence Shankland pursuit based on his previous comments

that both Celtic and Rangers sent top scouts to watch talented striker Lawrence Shankland in action over the weekend. Tosh McKinlay and Billy McLaren, from Celtic and Rangers respectively, were both at Tannadice watching the former Ayr United striker.

They would have been impressed with what they saw. Shankland scored a hat-trick in a 6-0 win, taking his tally for the season to 15 goals from 12 games for his new club Dundee United.

Of course, the Old Firm clubs were both linked with him throughout last season and this summer as he fired in the goals and with his contract expiring.

However, if it came down to a choice between both sides, Rangers might have the upper hand.

Last December, Shankland appeared on the BBC Scotland show Off The Ball. he was asked about speculation over his future, with Swansea City at the time the favourites to sign him.

Rangers soon came up. Shankland admitted he spent 10 months at Rangers as a bairn. When pressed on potential ‘unfinished business’ at Rangers, he responded positively:

“Hope so! I used to go and watch them when I was younger.

“It’s one of they ones. If it’s an option and you’re from Scotland it’s one you can’t easily turn down.”

So it appears that Ibrox holds a sentimental hold over Shankland. With Jermain Defoe only on loan until the end of the season and Alfredo Morelos being linked with big-money moves away, Steven Gerrard could be on the hunt for another striker in the summer.

If Shankland keeps this scoring form up he might just get a chance to address that ‘unfinished business’ at Ibrox after all.
