Rangers may have Mark Warburton to thank if Joe Worrall becomes a big hit

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard clearly wanted to improve the centre-back position this summer. He brought in a host of new faces in the position to try and solidify the back-line. The latest one of these signings he made was Joe Worrall.

The Nottingham Forest owned player has seen his chances at the City Ground diminish since the arrival of Aitor Karanka as head coach.

With that in mind, he was allowed to leave on loan, with Rangers managing to lure him to Ibrox. Although, it seems a little nudge was needed from a former Rangers boss.

“I spoke to Mark and Davie who had me at Forest. They said great things about Rangers, especially Davie who has a special connection with the club.

“Everything he said is true. It’s just a massive club with great facilities. Playing at Ibrox in front of those fans is something I can’t wait for…

“Mark is technical manager, where Davie was obviously a top defender. But they brought my game on an awful lot as a young lad. They kept me grounded.

“They taught me to receive the ball from the back and not take liberties. That has stood me in good stead.”

Mark Warburton’s tenure at Rangers came to a father acrimonious end. It also soured his relationship with many of the Ibrox faithful. That said, he did help Rangers win promotion back to the top-flight and who can forget that cup semi-final win v the eternal enemy Celtic.

After leaving Rangers, Warburton ended up at Forest, where he was a huge fan of Worrall’s. The young defender spoke this week of how he sought the advice of his former boss before choosing Rangers as his next destination.

Rangers will no doubt hope it pays off in the long-run. This is an England under-21 international who Burnley for in January.

If Rangers can eventually pull off a permanent deal, is the plan, Worrall could go on to be a great defender at Ibrox. If that proves to be the case, then a little thank you Warburton’s way would not be amiss.
