Rangers handed Europa League boost as Connor Goldson given go-ahead

Rangers have been handed a massive boost for Thursday, with Connor Goldson available for selection.

Filip Helander’s injury at the weekend against St. Johnstone gave the Gers a defensive headache for Lyon.

The centre-back was self-isolating but has reportedly been given the go-ahead to return to action ().

Now, though, with Goldson available the fans will be more comfortable going into the difficult clash.

Lyon will be an incredibly difficult challenge for Rangers, but their displays in Europe last season will provide inspiration.

Gerrard’s side went 12 games without defeat in Europe last season before losing at home to Slavia Prague and bowing out in the quarter-finals.

Connor Goldson played 90 minutes in every single one of the Gers’ Europa League games last season ().

With him now available he’ll surely play on Thursday night.

Against Lyon, though, it’s up in the air as to who he’ll start with.

With Helander injured and Jack Simpson not included in Rangers’ UEFA squad list, a defensive conundrum was arising.

Goldson’s availability helps and he’ll likely start alongside Leon Balogun.

His return gives the Gers a better chance of getting off to a winning start.

As well as Lyon, Rangers will face Sparta Prague and Brondby in a tough group.

Goldson will undoubtedly feature against all of those sides as one of Rangers’ key men, starting with Thursday night for his return.
